India is on a high economic growth trajectory and to supplement this growth it is extremely critical that we accelerate our Human Development Index. To address this, we require focused attention towards the development of our underserved population. The Government of India identified 115 most backward districts of India and launched the “Transformation of Aspirational Districts” Programme in January 2018. The objective of this programme is to raise the living standards and life chances of its citizens and ensuring inclusive growth for all. The 115 districts were selected from across 28 states.

The baseline ranking for the 115 Aspirational Districts are based on 49 indicators across 5 sectors that include health and nutrition (30% weightage) through 13 indicators, education (30%) through 8 indicators, agriculture and water resources (20%) through 10 indicators, financial inclusion and skill development (10%) through 10 indicators, and basic infrastructure (10%) through 7 indicators.

NITI Aayog partnered with Piramal Foundation in March 2018 and signed a 4-year Statement of Intent to cater to 25 Aspirational Districts across 7 states for - Health & Nutrition and Education - two sectors constituting the highest weightage.
