Swajal is a demand-driven, mini piped water supply scheme that lays emphasis on community ownership to ensure sustainable drinking water provision at remote rural habitations. We work closely with community and government departments at gram panchayat, district, state and national level. We've deployed a team of 25 states and district leads who deliver programmatic support across five thematic areas: behaviour change communication, IoT enabled monitoring and evaluation, water quality and solution design, source sustainability and operations and maintenance (O&M). We have conducted extensive mobilization activities to empower the communities to adopt Swajal. We’ve facilitated over 300 gram-sabha resolutions, that will (after completion of due government processes) impact as many as 1,00,000 people. We have developed an IoT-based remote monitoring solution (comprising of sensors and an online dashboard) for Swajal scheme and are collaborating with MDWS and NIC to pilot it at 10 locations across the country.

Many villages in Korba, Chhattisgarh have had issues with water contamination. The primary reason was due to proximity to coal mines of the habitations .This village was chosen for Swajal installation as it doesn't have any piped drinking water. This Piramal Foundation District Lead Mrityunjay organized Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) activities to sensitize the community on drinking water issues.A transect walk was conducted so that community is aware about the water quality at the major handpumps in the village. Social mapping exercise was carried out to plan the layout of the drinking water scheme to be implemented under Swajal. The community members took an oath to use water judiciously and extend their support to ensure Swajal is successfully implemented.
