About 12 Saathiya Karuna Fellows, as part of their project-based learning, have been actively involved in the Zero Plastic Waste campaign launched in Jhunjhunu. This campaign is a joint effort involving the district administration, council, education department, and Piramal Foundation. Its objective is to have a significant impact on 1,500 schools and students by promoting sustainable practices through educational programs, community engagement, and real-time experiential learning.
The Karuna Fellows engagement included:
- Over 2000 virtual calls to school headmasters, principals, and community leaders to discuss the environmental hazards of using plastic. This included sharing ideas on how to reduce the use of plastic and promoting the replacement of plastic with environmentally friendly materials.
- Visiting 50 plus schools and conducting activity-based awareness sessions with students on the environment-friendly use of resources, linking these practices with their academic subjects
- Actively took part in organizing rallies with community leaders, school leaders, and students to raise awareness about the campaign.
The project-based learning on the Zero Plastic Waste campaign has raised awareness about the environmental impact of plastic waste and the importance of adopting sustainable practices for the Karuna Fellows. Throughout the campaign, the Fellows learned to collaborate, persuade the community, and take initiatives with new ideas. The support, guidance, and innovative approaches provided by the Karuna Fellows have resulted in positive changes in behaviours, mindset, and community involvement. This has fostered a collective effort to address plastic waste and promote environmental sustainability.
