On 24th of November 2024, Ashram Shala Dhekale was filled with laughter, happiness, activities, dance and lots of emotions. Wanna know why? Dr. Devanshi Shrenik Vora, who was one of the Gandhi medical fellow and a student at K.E.M visited the students with bags of clothes and sports materials. It all started in the month of July when a group of students from K.E.M visited Ashram Shala Dhekale as part of their field visit of fellowship. The doctors who were already habituated to the harsh health realities of Mumbai city were taken aback seeing the conditions in which tribal students of Palghar lived. It came as a shocker to them to see that the students sat on the floors, cramped in a small room where they studied, ate food and even slept with wet clothes hanging above them even during monsoon.
The fellows who had come from Mumbai conversed with the locals and HM of the school to understand the health and nutrition availabilities of the students. It is post this visit in July that Dr Devanshi whose family is into small philanthropic efforts each year decided to donate clothes to 160 students living in the Ashram Shala this time.
Dr. Devanshi was in touch with Gandhi fellow, Sonam Smirti who has been with the school for the past one year relentlessly working for enhancing the quality of education of these students with the school staff. It was during Sonam’s community immersion that the project took its full- fledged shape. She along with the supporting staff of the school took measurements of each student and sent it to Dr. Devanshi for the products to be dispatched. With all its challenges coordinating online, on 24th November 2024 Sunday, Sonam along with her Ops team and co fellows welcomed Devanshi and her father for the philanthropic function.
They were welcomed with handmade flower bouquets and the traditional tribal dance form Tarpa. As a token of love, they were gifted with the traditional warli painting made by students of ashram schools in Palghar. Post the inauguration function, 2 cotton t-shirts, a track pant and a stainless steel bottle was distributed to each student by the family. The excited and overwhelmed students ran to change into their new clothes. After an exciting photo session with the family, everybody danced together performing Tarpa, smiling and enjoying the beats of music and finally called it a day.
